"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised." — Luke 4:18

UPDATE (AUGUST 26, 2007)

Over the years the once blooming Kenyan economy have gradually and steal highly deteriorated succumbing most of its citizens to live below poverty line.(living below a Dollar)

The poor constitute more than half population of Kenya at least one in every two Kenyan is poor.

Their income has always been appetence compared to the many mouths it has to serve. This has left most families unable to sustainable afford to the basic daily needs a condition that leads to high mortality rate due to poor health by lack of enough money to afford proper health facilities.

HIV/AIDS pandemic is also another deadly source that has ripped Kenyan very potential family breadwinners. Smart Nakuru has embarked on program to combat HIV/AIDS through sensitization advocacy and behavior change among the youth and the community at large.

Incidences of HIV/AIDS transmission sexually transmitted disease and Teen – pregnancies have risen to a alarming rates in Rhonda Slums in Kenya . HIV/AIDS is with us in real tangible way and its prevention must be practiced less in words and more in attitude and actions.

The problem affects youth between 15 – 35 years of age and affects Kenya at large as scores of contributions fully of the country social and economy development.

Due to lack of availability of sexually health information, youth are not well prepared to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS infections, Sexually transmitted disease and unplanned teen – pregnancy.

KIMANI( 20 yrs).

Kimani is a young man aged 20 yrs,he told us due to poverty in Rhonda Slums most of the youth can not continue their education beyond primary school. As most of their parents have since died or remaining with one parent who is jobless and can not afford to buy food for themselves and their children.

ONYANGO (57 yrs)

Onyango is an old man his wife died in the year 2000 leaving behind 11 children. he has been in the slum for the last 40 years.

When I asked him to define poverty,he said that poverty is me, look at me!look at my cloths, I didn’t have anything this morning and I am not sure if I will eat anything to-day my children are not in school and should they fall ill, I can not afford to take them to the hospital.

COMMENT.

There is need to provide small revolving loan (funds) Micro-credit to the widows, widowers and disadvantage people living in the said slum – this will engage them in income generation activities (IGA) that would promote self reliance and sustenance in order to reduce poverty.

CONCLUTION:

Most of the youth we visited are not attending school and currently are not receiving adequate sexually health education. The lack of continuity HIV/AIDS workshops in the slum is a major hindrance SmartNakuru is currently seeking funding to organize a workshops/seminars in one of the school in the slum to promote abstinence especially those attending the primary schools.

Out-of- school youth have very little opportunities to sexual to access sexual health education. Many youth who leave primary school do not continue on to the secondary (High school) and such lose access to any health education provided in high schools. Currently there is lack of outreach programs in Rhonda slums to meet the needs of these youths.

For these youths we are looking for Funds to set up a vocational training center come next year to equip them with useful skills which will help them to be economically independent and self reliance to the future.

(Our pilot project will be Girls Orphans, later Boys Orphans)
We were requesting for friends/Organizations, Churches, ministries to send us used or new sewing machine, knitting machines Iron boxes, used / New Computers, small grants for these girls after completing their courses textiles materials etc.

At the Center, we will provide them with adequate information regarding HIV/AIDS by creation of educational materials such as printed pamphlets, Video Shows, attending the annual HIV/AIDS Day events and will also by inviting key resource persons such as Doctors, Nurses and Counselors from the ministry of Health to talk to them at least once per week.

OBJECTIVE

Will be empowering the youth to enable them take their rightful place in the society and contribute positively to the development of the nation.

GOAL

To provide the youth especially girls in Rhonda Slums with training courses ( Technical and Manual Skills) Which will help them in future, and by providing such courses girls problems like drug use , unwanted pregnancies emotional, frustrations and many would be brought to minimum, HIV/AIDS information will be disseminated to the GIRLS.

The organization has 60 Aids Orphans between the ages of 3-15 yrs, who are desperately looking for sponsors to support them.
